Firearms Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training

F.I.R.S.T. Pistol Orientation presented by KMI & NRA Certified Firearms Instructors.

Course Goal

To provide beginning shooters with an introduction to the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to own and safely use a pistol.

F.I.R.S.T., “Firearm Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training”, is short-form program originally developed by the NRA to meet the need for a firearms orientation program for new or interested gun purchasers and shooters.

This F.I.R.S.T. program is a basic course focused on fundamental shooting skills, and the specifics of the modern semi-automatic pistol.

F.I.R.S.T. Pistol is designed to provide a hands on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation of the semi-automatic pistol. This course is two and 1/2 hours long and includes classroom and range time on the KMI simulation range. In addition to dry fire drills, we will be utilizing extremely realistic, NON-LIVE FIRE, mil-sim spec training pistols (Glock and Sig Sauer) based on Airsoft gas blow back technology.

Students will learn the rules for safe gun handling; the pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; cleaning and safe storage of the pistol; and continued opportunities for skills development.

NRA FIRST Pistol Orientation Lesson Plans

  • Pistol Safety, Parts, Ammunition and Operation
  • Fundamentals of Pistol Shooting
  • Pistol Shooting from the Benchrest and Standing Position
  • Pistol Cleaning, Storage, and Training Opportunities

Students will receive continuous feedback on the dry and live-fire exercise and a course certificate upon successful completion of the lessons.

Additionally, upon successful demonstration of firing a qualifying “group”, students will receive a “Basic Practical” rocker (patch).

Completion of this course fulfills the firearms handling prerequisites for KMI’s Applied Tactics courses including: Applied Tactical Shooting (ATS), Armed Intruder Response (AIR), Close Quarters Battle (CQB), Tactical Medicine, Pistol 101, and Israeli Tactical Point Shooting (ITPS) courses.
